A favourite with both holiday makers and locals and the best known of the beach holiday resorts, Camps Bay is famous for its wide, sandy beach and large tidal pool. This spectacularly scenic area is overlooked by Lion's Head mountain peak and backed by the impressive buttresses of the Twelve Apostles mountain range. The curved white beach, punctuated by rocky coves at either end, encircles a cobalt blue bay. Tall palm trees line the adjacent avenue, giving it a real 'South of France' holiday feel and making it a wonderful place for a leisurely stroll. The main promenade is lined with sidewalk cafes and restaurants spilling onto the pavement offering anything from a light breakfast and cappuccino to gourmet dinners and decadent cocktails.
During the holiday season Camps Bay beach is a hub of activity and energy, with beach volleyballers leaping about at one end of the sand while models strut their stuff for film shoots at the other end. It is particularly popular with families, groups of young people and the surfers who brave the hard-breaking waves and chilly waters of the adjacent cove, Glen Beach. The Atlantic Ocean is very refreshing and offers a quick cool down on a hot summer's day. The weather is generally hot and dry in Camps Bay but, when the South Easterly wind is blowing, follow the local sunworshippers over to the neighbouring coves of Clifton, another of Cape Town's famous beaches. The promenade also features some upmarket boutiques, a small but good supermarket, a fishmonger and delicatessen and a number of community facilities as this is very much a living, working seaside village. At night the area is alive with a mixture of slightly sandy, sarong clad beach-goers having a last sundowner at one of the trendy bars, and elegantly clad diners stepping out for a fresh seafood dinner. Leading up from the esplanade the ground slopes steeply to meet the high sandstone ridges of the Twelve Apostles mountain range and to the north, Lion's Head. Villas, houses and upmarket apartments line the winding streets, interspersed with large tracts of natural forest with fresh mountain streams. Sunsets from here are often spectacularly beautiful.
