Africa Safaris, South Africa Luxury Tours and Travel Reservations

Cape Town,Rovos Rail,Singita Safari

14 DAYS—available at any time of the year, and a Botswana Safari is a easy add on.

Day 1

United States

International flights set off today from Atlanta or New York.

Day 2

Cape Town

A seamless airport arrival has been arranged by the Micato

Safaris Tour Escort, who also accompanies us to one of

Cape Town’s ultra-deluxe hotels, the Table Bay or Cape

Grace. The stylish Victoria and Alfred Waterfront is virtu-ally

at our doorstep and a stroll around the shops and

cafes is a lovely introduction to South Africa.

Day 3

Cape Town

With a magnificent view of the ocean, we enjoy breakfast

at the hotel before heading off to explore the Cape

Peninsula area on a full-day tour. Views of both the Atlantic

coastline en route to the fabled Cape of Good Hope. At

Cape Point we ascend by funicular for a memorable view of

the union of two oceans…and some say that the ghosts

from centuries of shipwrecks also inhabit these shores!

Then to historic Simon’s Town with its charming Victorian

architecture and surprising penguin colony found at

Boulders Beach.

And tonight, a very special event await us. Micato trav-ellers

are welcomed to cocktails and dinner at the home of

a prominent Cape Town couple—Micato’s hosts in South

Africa —who share their local knowledge, favorite places

and, best of all, warm hospitality. A guest speaker will also

be on hand to lecture on topics of relevance to the new

South Africa.

Day 4

Cape Town

Winelands

Not only are South African wines world-renowned, but

the vineyard region—a mere forty-five minutes from Cape

Town—is lyrically lovely. Hence our time today is spent in

elegant pursuits…visiting wine estates, touring a wine-maker’s

private cellar and enjoying tastings of vintage pri-vate

stock. And, naturally, an inspired gourmet lunch  at one of the vineyards. We also tour

the charming village of Stellenbosch,

with its streets of Cape Dutch, Georgian

and Victorian buildings seemingly

untouched over the centuries. Our

return drive through the lush country-side—

steeped in history, dotted with

gabled, whitewashed houses and sur-rounded

by dramatic mountains—

concludes in Cape Town and our splen-did

waterfront hotel.

Day 5

Cape Town

Rovos Rail

While only a short trip to the railroad

station in Cape Town, it is a genteel

step back in time. The golden age of

rail travel —a magic and romance all

but lost to the modern world—

endures exclusively today aboard

Rovos Rail. The experience is luxuri-ous

and grand, matched perhaps only

by the celebrated Venice Simplon–

Orient–Express.

Rovos Rail is comprised of twenty

superbly restored coaches, many dat-ing

back to the halcyon days of rail

travel in the 1920s, replete with plush

furnishings, fine wood paneling and

period décor. The heart and soul of

Rovos Rail is, of course, its vintage

steam locomotives that not even the

Orient-Express can claim. Dining

aboard Rovos Rail is a singular plea-sure

as well, with world-class cuisine

served in opulent style. The train calls

this evening in Matjiesfontein and we

enjoy a tour of this picturesque village.

Day 6

Rovos Rail

Following an old pioneering trail

carved out of the African bushveld, the

train travels past winelands, through mountains and along

the scenic Hex River Valley. Astonishing views are every-where

but especially from the Observation Car at the end of

the train with its large panel windows and magnificent

open-air balconies.

Our deluxe cabins offer twin or double beds with ensuite

bathrooms and sitting areas, decorated with the elegance

that one would expect from the world’s most luxurious

train. Today we stop in Kimberley, DeBeer’s diamond

boomtown. A tram ride takes us through town to dine at

the local country club and tour the diamond museum.

Day 7

Singita Private Game Reserve

At midday we quit the legendary train in Pretoria and

board light aircraft bound for yet another legend—Kruger

National Park, South Africa’s premier wildlife sanctuary

and home to Singita Private Game Reserve. Any traveller

having read even the slightest amount about travel in South

Africa will have heard the wildly effusive praise being lav-ished

on Singita. And for good reason.

Yes, the game viewing is fantastic and the rangers hugely

informative…but one can take that for granted. It’s the

accommodations that render travellers utterly speechless

ranging in style from the nostalgic and romantic to the

exotic and sexy. Picture an old colonial hunting lodge

complete with artefacts, first-edition books, vintage pho-tographs

of the owners’ ancestors, heavy four-poster beds,

double-sided fireplaces and private plunge pools with

panoramic views. And now imagine native South Africa

merging with the avant-garde: glass-walled suites with beds

draped in sheer white netting, tribal black and white tex-tiles,

theatrical Venetian glass chandeliers, polished teak fur-nishings

and crispy white linens. Wha

Day 8 – Day 9

Singita Private Game Reserve

Singita is also distinguished by the wide range of activities

to enjoy. Game drives and bush walks, clay pigeon shoot-ing,

fishing the rivers, a guided visit to a Shangaan tribal

village, bush breakfasts and sunset cocktails at some glori-ous

location within the reserve. Meals are also events in

themselves. And if we so desire, we may even dine on the

privacy of our veranda every day. Plus, Singita’s hidden

treasure—the best bush cellar in Africa. Buried deep in the

cool rock below the lodge, it boasts a unique wine selection

of over 12,000 bottles.

Between game drives and bush activities, we will also want

to peruse the Trading Store showcasing Africa’s finest cloth-ing

and artwork, perhaps enjoy a massage on our private

deck, or exercise in the air-conditioned health center. Better

still, take a jog in the wide expanse of the reserve…accom-panied,

of course, by an armed guide in a Land Rover!

Day 10

Victoria Falls

One long, last look over the savannah and we board our

flight to Livingstone, Zambia, via Johannesburg. Here our

accommodations are, yet again, exquisite. Nestled into a

leafy grove of ebony trees upstream from the falls, we set-tle

into Tongabezi Lodge, from where we enjoy not only

the spectacle of Victoria Falls, but also the indigenous

bush and forest and our own private veranda on the

Zambezi River—an unbeatable combination for any

lodge, anywhere. Our cottage is an elegant reflection of

nature, with natural materials and patterned textiles. So

rich, so African. This evening, the river calls to us and we

surrender to its tranquil beauty aboard a sunset cruise

with a cool drink in hand.

Day 11 – Day 12

Victoria Falls

One of the seven natural wonders of the world, the grand

cascade of Victoria Falls astonishes. Rainbows shimmer in

a veil of mist, orchids and lilies bloom in the rainforest,

butterflies flutter through the glade, the curtain of water

roars and the utter power of nature is awe-inspiring. There

are so many inviting paths to explore on our tour, includ-ing

viewpoints above the Eastern Cataracts, the Boiling

Pot and other gorges. The footbridge to Knife’s Edge is

particularly rewarding. And for the bold, we include the

exhilarating aerial tour over the

Falls, the "Flight of Angels."

Other delightful pursuits also

await. Perhaps we will set off on a

game drive in the Mosi-Oa-Tunya

Reserve with it ample white rhino

population, observe traditional life

at Chief Mukuni’s village and

school, prowl the handicraft mar-kets,

cast a line for Tiger Fish, or

glide in a canoe past hippo pods

along the banks of Zambezi

National Park on the Zimbabwe

side of the river across from our

lodge. Here, elephants drink from

the water’s edge, bucks prance

through the deep emerald forest

and so much more.

As the sun sets over the Zambezi

tonight, we listen one last time

to the calling of birds, snorting of

hippos and trumpeting of ele-phants.

And we recall the majes-tic

sights of Southern Africa that we have witnessed.

What an extraordinary journey this has been.

Day 13

Johannesburg

United States

our way back to civilisation. Homebound flights await

us in Johannesburg this evening.
